General Information About Photo Film Equipment
Even though digital cameras have overtaken the professional and amateur photography market, you can still find plenty of film cameras and equipment for sale. Some photographers prefer the control they have when they use film cameras, and are reticent to give up the benefits of using film. There are some items that every film photographer should know about before going out to take pictures with a film camera.
Choosing the Right Film
One of the most important pieces of photo film equipment is the type of film you choose. Most professional and high quality amateur cameras work with 35mm film. Film is available in several different varieties, and each different kind of film will take different types of photos. The first thing to decide is whether you want to take black and white photos or color photos. Once you've chosen the color saturation for your film, you have to decide which ISO rating you need. In general, higher ISO ratings take better pictures in well lit situations, and lower ISO ratings are better for low light situations.
Different Lenses for Different Effects
The other piece of photo film equipment that has a direct impact on the pictures you take is the camera lens. Most 35mm cameras allow you to swap out lenses for different needs. Longer lenses will have extreme zooming capabilities so that you can make objects that are far away look closer in your picture. The other end of the spectrum is lenses that are designed to take pictures of small items from very close up. Most lenses work best for something in between the extreme zoom or extreme close up.
Equipment for Developing Film
Unlike digital film, 35mm film needs to be processed before it can become prints. Most photographers will take the used film to a processing store, but some like to develop their film on their own. To develop your film you will need a dark room that is completely blocked from all light sources. You'll need a developing tank and several different solutions to wash the negatives in and enlarge them for prints. Developing equipment is not expensive, but you do need to do some research before you begin trying to develop pictures in your own darkroom.
