Developing Color Film

All color print film on the market uses the same C-41 developing process and standardized techniques. Photographic supply houses sell C-41 kits for home hobby use. The basic process of developing your own color film is as follows.

First, Organize your materials. In addition to the color processing kit, you will need a daylight film-developing tank with reels, three graduates, thermometer, timer, film drying clips, and storage bottles for the extra chemical.

Next, load the film onto the developing reel. In a lightproof changing bag or completely dark room, remove the cap off the film canister with a bottle opener. Unspool the film and roll it onto the film reel. Place the reel into a light tight developing tank. Once the film is loaded into the tank, the rest of the developing process may be done in daylight.

The C-41 kit comes with a developer, bleach/fixer, and stabilizer. Mix the chemicals according to the manufacturer's directions. It will take 8 ounces of processing chemicals for each roll of film in the tank. Pour the appropriate amount of chemical into each of the graduates. Check the temperature; the developer needs to be 102 degrees Fahrenheit, but the bleach/fixer and stabilizer can be 95-105 degrees. Proper temperature of the developer is crucial for consistent results.

Presoak the film with 102-degree water for one minute. Dump the water and then pour the developer in the tank. Gently rap the tank two or three times to dislodge any air bubbles. Develop for 3.5 minutes, agitating by inverting the tank four times every thirty seconds.

After the developer step, dump the developer back into the storage container. Pour the bleach/fixer into the tank and process for 6.5 minutes with 4 agitations every 30 seconds. At the end of this cycle, pour the bleach/fixer back into the storage container and wash for 3 minutes with running water. You may take the cover off the tank during the wash cycle.

At the end of the wash cycle, dump the water and pour the stabilizer into the tank for one minute, agitating every 30 seconds. Return the stabilizer to the storage container, unreel the film and hang it up to dry.
