Photo Film Equipment (PFE)

Darkroom Supplies

For photographers, taking pictures means everything to them. Some photographers aspire to develop their own film, in which case a darkroom will need to be built. As can be expected, there are a number of supplies a photographer will need before being able to develop film in their darkroom.

First and foremost, a darkroom enlarger will be required. This is probably the most important and technically one of the only required pieces of the puzzle in building a darkroom. It is possible to find a darkroom enlarger in the newspaper or perhaps a yard sale for a low price. It is also the biggest piece of equipment that will be needed. If lucky, one can be found for well under a hundred dollars. New enlargers will go for quite a bit, however. It is around this piece of equipment, which is the most expensive piece, that the darkroom will evolve based on the photographer's needs.

A fair amount of shallow developing trays will be needed as well, for the photos to soak within. Tongs are a good idea as well, since the photographer will not want to get solution on their finger tips or damage the photo with oil and can instead use the tongs to hold the photo while removing and rinsing it.

A timer can be useful when supplying the darkroom but is by no means necessary. If it is not desirable to fish out some money for a timer, simply use a light switch and a stopwatch, or perhaps use the time on a mobile phone with the light dimmed. Be careful where the light shines when checking the time, no matter what the source of the light is.

Lastly, get a safelight, which is a special kind of light that, unlike others, will not fog the photographic paper. They are usually available for about fifteen dollars or can alternatively be made using a night light bulb. The wattage should be about seven and the bulb should be covered with rubylith, which will most likely be available at any art supply store for a fairly low price.
