Types of Photography
Almost everyone has either taken a picture or been in one. Photography is an art form that attracts professionals and appeals to millions of amateur hobbyists. There is an array of types of photography to pursue.
Portraiture is one of the most popular types. Whether the subject is a pet or your family, the goal is to capture the personality of the subject(s) in the image. Graduation and wedding photos are examples.
Action photography is challenging, exciting and fast. It involves catching subjects in motion such as a plane taking off or an animal charging. Sport photography, a subcategory, is the art of photographing people engaged in adventure activities, sports, or games.
Advertising or Studio photography involves taking photos that are generic; for example, people working, flowers, and a cup. Stock, model and fashion photography are examples of pictures taken to promote a product or to distribute to other people to use in projects.
Outdoor and Travel photography includes photographing general landscapes as well as unique sights in various geographic locales. Nature photography, such as that of wildlife, plants, or the sea, also falls into this category.
Documentary, or photojournalism, is a form of photography which either records events or is used to tell a story. If events are captured as they happen, the photographs may be published as news. At other times, the images may document an ongoing situation or condition to expand public awareness.
Aerial photography is simply photos taken from the air. Images may be shot from balloons, aircraft, kites, or even remotely controlled model airplanes. This type of photography is very useful in map making, planning, environmental studies, and commercial development. Satellite photography, actually space-based aerial, has provided scientific data about the earth as well as the planets and stars.
Macrophotography is a type of photography in which pictures are taken at a very close range. Subjects might include flowers, insects, a raindrop, or textures where close-up imaging brings out interesting details.
Microphotography is scientific photography. Images of extremely tiny subjects are taken through a microscope using a special camera. It is used to document complex subjects and topics in disciplines as varied as geology, astronomy, biology and medicine.
