Photo Film
The most commonly used type of photo film is 35mm, also known as 135 film. This film size was established as a standard when introduced by the Kodak company in 1934. Almost all film cameras utilize 35mm film, which produces an image that is 26x36mm in dimension and a 2mm space between the images on the film itself. Cameras are built around the film, which is interesting considering there are not too many other objects that come to mind which are build around their accessories.
While most amateur photographers use strictly 35mm standard film and equipment, many professionals use what is called medium format film. This film is generally available in 6cm square sheets that are used for 12 exposures. There are other sizes of film available, but these two sizes are the most common.
In addition to the different sizes of photo film, photographers need to determine what type of film to use. There are two specific types and the decision of which to use is based on how the images will be utilized. If the photographer wants printed images, they use what is called negative film. This film is processed to create negative images that are then used to print positive images. Positive film is used when images will be presented as slides or more commonly, transparencies. Positive film is not printed. Once the film is processed, the process is complete.
In addition to the two main types of photo film, there are sub types. These can include black and white or color film and different speed films. Obviously, color or black and white means the difference between how image colors are captured. Different speed films are normally used to capture images in different lighting conditions.
Regardless of which type of photo film a photographer is using, there are some basic handling instructions that everyone should follow. Film must be stored in an airtight container, preferably in a cool, dark area. A refrigerator is the perfect storage location for film. Film should be allowed to slowly come to room temperature before it's container is opened to ensure maximum quality. And, film should never be exposed to water or wet conditions when at all possible.
